It is that time of the month, the time to dig into a royal vault and awe before the luxury and history of the royal jewels. This month I will talk about the jaw dropping Spanish Royal Collection ▫️ Long ago Spain used to be one of the most powerful countries in the world (16th - 17th century) but most of their current jewels come from a more recent period ▫️ First off let me start with an amazing Devant-de-Corsage that belonged to Queen Maria Christina. The large brooch is composed of an openwork design suspending an oval-shaped pendant, aside from diamond tassels which were later removed ▫️ Born an Archduchess of Austria, Maria Christina married Alfonso XII, King of Spain, who presented her with this piece upon their wedding in 1879 ▫️ We can see an illustration of her wedding gifts in pic 3, which includes the stomacher, a coronet, a tiara, a flower brooch, a necklace and a pair of bracelets ▫️ You can check in pic 2 the Queen wearing a tiara, two bracelets, a floral pieces around her neck, two diamond rivières along her dress ending in the large stomacher on her waist ▫️ At some point the stomacher left the Royal Collection and ended up in the Thyssen-Bornemisza's collection. Tita, who is the Dowager Baroness Thyssen-Bornemisza, can be seen wearing the magnificent piece as a brooch in picture 7. She tried to sell the piece in a 2015 auction by Christie's but the final bid failed to reach the minimal value required (CHF 1.5 Millions) ▫️ To check more royal jewelry and the history behind them, follow my hashtag #royaljewelsbyzulg 😉
